on the immortal jellyfish

We’d have to be fundamentally different from ourselves to be immortal. We’d have to be like jellyfish. We couldn’t have hearts. We couldn’t feel them beating madly inside us. We wouldn’t know we were alive. We wouldn’t be alive forever but more just never needing an update, a medical exam. We need more than just the regular tests for this one, for a withdrawing into oneself — what might be called a severe withdrawal, a complete alteration of consciousness.
